The Swell Season at Greek Theatre

back to LA for another show

I have told you a million times to see the movie Once. Then go buy the soundtrack, then go to a Swell Season show.

Woomer and I bought tickets back in the spring to see The Swell Season in LA on October 4, 2008, so it was a perfect excuse for me to take a long weekend in LA. The show was absolutely amazing. These are the people who won the Oscar for Best Original Song in a film this year for “Falling Slowly”. The movie trailer is above, and a clip from the show is below.

A couple of highlights: since I got to LA earlier than expected, Woomer hooked me up with tickets to see Sigur Ros at the Greek Theatre two nights before The Swell Season – perfect timing! Iron & Wine opened, amazing in itself – The Swell Season do an amazing cover of Van Morrison’s “Into the Mystic,” which they opened with.

Glen told a story about meeting a guy in LA back in February, when they were here for the Oscars, and the guy happened to be Richard Sherman, who wrote the music for Mary Poppins, The Jungle Book, and many others. Richard was in the audience and they brought him up to sing Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious – seriously…only in LA.

The clip below shows Glen singing “Say It To Me Now” unplugged. The Greek Theatre is open air and seats 6000+. We were about 4000 people back and could hear him clearly – impressive!

Glen does a cover of Van Morrison’s “Astral Weeks,” in which he abuses his guitar so much that he breaks strings and has to stop to tune at least 4-5 times.

So if you still have not, go see the movie, but don’t ruin the movie by getting the soundtrack earlier. Trust me. Once is a movie that is critically tied to the music.
