some of the best music in recent years
For those of you who used to listen to my CDs, you have heard how much I love The Shins. For those of you who have seen the movie Garden State, you know how much Sam (Natalie Portman) loves The Shins. And for those of you who know me well, you know how much I love Natalie Portman.
Well, The Shins have released their 3rd album, Wincing The Night Away, this week after quite a wait (over 3 years since their last album, Chutes Too Narrow). Of course, I highly recommend going out and getting their new album, but if you don’t know much about The Shins, I would actually recommend starting from the beginning with Oh, Inverted World, which was released back in 2001. Two songs from that album, “New Slang,” and “Caring Is Creepy,” are featured in Garden State.
Come to think of it, if you have yet to see Garden State, you are really missing out. Zach Braff, from the TV show Scrubs, wrote, directed, and starred in the movie – along with Natalie Portman, obviously. The entire soundtrack for the movie is great too. It also features “The Only Living Boy in New York,” by Simon and Garfunkel, and an Iron & Wine cover of The Postal Service’s “Such Great Heights.”
Back to The Shins… These guys are convincing me that good music isn’t dead yet.
